The Saturday Night Live star got more than a little emotional Thursday morning after hearing her name called
Kate McKinnon‘s Thursday got off to a great, albeit emotional, start.
“I was in my bed in Boston,” the Saturday Night Live star, 31, tells PEOPLE of when she heard the news that she’d been nominated for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series. “I’m here shooting Ghostbusters and had a night shoot until 6 in the morning. I got home and should have slept late, but I just couldn’t.”
And she was more than excited. “I’m crazed,” says McKinnon. “There were just hot, wet tears.”
The recognition came as a surprise for the actress: “I don’t know how this whole thing works,” she says of the Emmys’ voting process. “I can not believe that I’m in this list. I think it’s a mistake, but whatever.”
But there’s no mistaking McKinnon’s most memorable sketch from this past season. “I will say, something I’m very proud of was parodying Justin Bieber‘s Calvin Klein ad. I love him so much. Cecily Strong played the model who was just so over me. That was one of the funnest times I’ve had all year.”
To celebrate, McKinnon says she’s going for a non-traditional treat. “There is this Vietnamese soup that I’ve been eating a lot that I love, and I’m going to go pound one of those. I’m so, so excited. I’m going to enjoy that.”
And she says she’s got her Emmys ensemble all figured out not: “Probably going to go with a dress. I don’t know if you’ve heard of jewelry, but probably some of that. And a girl needs a shoe,” she jokes. “No, I will be enlisting wonderful women who will help me.”
